Leila (Lauren Lee Smith) is a sexually vorac! ious young woman who connects with men through sex. One night at a party, she meets David (Eric Balfour). Later, as she has casual sex with a stranger outside, David and his girlfriend mirror her actions in their car. Their eyes lock, beginning a courtship ritual that initiates their own sexual affair. Leila and David get to know each other - which means being intimate - in bed, on the roof, in the park, everywhere. For them and other members of their generation, sex is communication. Just as Leila realizes her attraction to David is different than anything she has ever known, he retreats. Her explosive reaction knows no bounds. Now they must conquer their demons in order to move beyond the purely physical and satisfy the emotional connection they unknowingly crave.Shot in sunny Toronto and set to a dreamy score, Lie With Me looks and sounds like an art film, but the end result isn't quite so lofty. The plot is thin and the dialogue superfluous, but no matter--Canada! 's Clément Virgo (Love Come Down) just wants to turn y! ou on an d he has enlisted two attractive, uninhibited young performers to assist in his aims. Leila (Lauren Lee Smith, The L Word) and David (Eric Balfour, Six Feet Under) meet at a party. He's with his girlfriend, but finds himself drawn to her. The feeling is mutual. She's alone, but quickly finds an unattached hipster with whom to have a tryst. David catches her in the act. Instead of turning away, he watches. They start seeing each other immediately afterwards. "I'm not hooked on danger, [I'm] hooked on sex," Leila claims, but she isn't exactly the most trustworthy narrator. She wants a purely physical relationship, while David wants something more. They return to their old lives, but the obsession refuses to die. Based on the novella by Virgo's partner, Tamara Berger, Lie With Me plays like a low-budget cross between Adrian Lyne's overrated 9 1/2 Weeks and Wayne Wang's underrated The Center of the World. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

The movie stumbles a bit when it ventures outdoors--it's hard to imagine Russia really conquered the Ottoman Turks with a 12-man army--but sizzles inside. Zeta-Jones conveys both passion and hard-edged ambition as her character transforms herself from manipulated to manipulator. Many of those manipulations occur in the bedroom, and the movie takes some! liberties in portraying her union with military leader Grigory Potemkin (Paul McGann); here he's practically a saint, although history remembers him a bit less nobly.
The supporting cast includes Jeanne Moreau in a masterful portrayal of Empress Elizabeth, along with Ian Richardson, Mel Ferrer, and Omar Sharif. Although there's plenty of scenery for them to chew, they hold back, allowing Zeta-Jones her 100 minutes of greatness. --Kimberly Heinrichs
Today I am sad, my mood's heavy and gray.
There's a frown on my face and it's been there all day.
My best friend and I had a really big fight.
She said that I tattled and I know that she's right.
Silly, cranky, excited, or sad--everyone has moods that can change each day. Jamie Lee Curtis's zany and touching verse, paired with Laura Cornell's whimsical and original illustrations, helps kids explore, identify, and, even have fun with their ever-changing moods.
Here's another inspired pict! ure book from the bestselling author-illustrator team of Tell Me Again About the Night I Was Born and When I Was Little: A Four-Year-Old's Memoir of Her Youth.
Jamie Lee Curtis has starred in many movies, but she says that the children's books she has written mean more to her than any of her films. She and artist Laura Cornell have previously collaborated on two bestselling books: Tell Me Again About the Night I Was Born and When I Was Little: A Four-Year-Old's Memoir of Her Youth. This time, we follow a little girl with curly red hair through 13 different moods, beginning with silly: "Today I feel silly. / Mom says it's the heat. I put rouge on the cat / and gloves on my feet." Of course, silly soon turns to grumpy and mean... to excited... to confused, and so on. Recognizing one's own mood swings is a developmental milestone, one that some adults haven't yet mastered! Cornell's watercolor illustrations--wildly expressive and e! nergetic--effectively capture the volatility of our redheaded ! star. W hether she is happy or mad or dancing a solo in jazz, she is always "full of pizzazz," and this book is, too. A clever mood wheel on the last page allows young readers to change the little girl's expression--both her eyes and mouth. This is silly fun with a smart lesson for children from ages 4 to 8. --Marcie Bovetz

In 1959 South Korea was mired in poverty. By 1979 it had a powerful industrial economy and a vibrant civil society in the making, which would lead to a democratic breakthrough eight years later. The transformation took place during the years of Park Chung Heeâs presidency. Park seized power in a coup in 1961 and ruled as a virtual dictator until his assassination in October 1979. He is credited with modernizing South Korea, but at a huge political and social cost.
South Koreaâs politic! al landscape under Park defies easy categorization. The state was predatory yet technocratic, reform-minded yet quick to crack down on dissidents in the name of political order. The nation was balanced uneasily between opposition forces calling for democratic reforms and the Park governmentâs obsession with economic growth. The chaebol (a powerful conglomerate of multinationals based in South Korea) received massive government support to pioneer new growth industries, even as a nationwide campaign of economic shock therapyâ"interest hikes, devaluation, and wage cutsâ"met strong public resistance and caused considerable hardship.
This landmark volume examines South Koreaâs era of development as a study in the complex politics of modernization. Drawing on an extraordinary range of sources in both English and Korean, these essays recover and contextualize many of the ambiguities in South Koreaâs trajectory from poverty to a sustainable high rate of economic growt! h.
This is the published version of the author's 2004 Ph.D.! dissert ation at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, which investigates the syntax, semantics, and pragmatics of the Internally-Headed Relative Clause construction in Korean and Japanese.Kim Min-joo suggests that marketing is a part of our lives and shows some interesting success and failure marketing cases of South Korea, the Americas, and Europe in Marketing Adventures. The protagonist of Marketing Adventures, Lee Ma-soo, has been learning practical marketing through various cases while traveling in the Americas, Europe and so on. Marketing Adventures fascinatingly explains 'experience marketing' through the story about the air freshener Febreze and 'niche marketing' through the case of Southwest Airlines which has retained its place as the number four carrier in the US rankings due to their low price policy. ? Marketing Adventures insightfully offers the latest marketing cases to the general reader. IN addition, it includes practical episodes and a diverse range of real case! s, so it is very informative not only to the public, but also to experts. The overarching goal of this study is to investigatehow syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic factorsinteract to produce what is called the InternallyHeaded Relative Clause construction in Korean andJapanese. This study shows that the construction'sinterpretation is determined by both grammaticalfactors and pragmatic factors. In addition, twosources of the semantic variability of theconstruction are isolated. The analysis advanced hereestablishes important connections between thesemantics of a definite description and eventstructure, thereby solving the particularlychallenging formal-linking problem, one that afflictsthe previous E-type pronoun analyses. It alsoprovides a constrained but flexible interpretivemechanism for the construction, eliminating the needfor many of the extra-grammatical constraints thatcharacterize existing treatments.Studio: Virgil Films And Entertai Release Date: 01/26/2010 Run ! time: 126 minutesThis digital document is an article from Ear,!
